The Jewel Case

As MP3 players and iTunes dominate the music scene now, many of us are left with a stack of abandoned CD’s and/or jewel cases.  Or you may have transferred all of your CD’s to a disc organizer and are left with a pile of empty jewel cases.  The jewel cases are made of PVC (poly-vinyl chloride), which is extremely difficult to recycle; hence, most standard recycling facilities won’t accept them.   You have a few options:

1.        If you have the CD’s, you can sell them on the internet on a site such as half.com.  Or you can sell them to a used music store in your area.
2.       If you have only the jewel cases, consider donating them to a used music store in your area.  They are always in need of extra jewel cases to replace cracked ones that people trade-in.
3.       You can re-purpose them.  There are several craft ideas that use jewel cases (picture frames, desk calendar, etc).  One that I really like is a jewel case scrapbook, shown in the picture below.

Jewel case scrapbook

My son’s 4H Club recently made a craft with used jewel cases that the kids really enjoyed.  The final product is shown here:

It was rather simple to make (if an eight-year old can do it, I’m sure you’ll have no trouble).  Here’s how:

1.        From the jewel case, remove the inner labels and the plastic piece that holds the disc in place.
2.       Cut two pieces of paper the size of front cover.  Cut two pieces of paper the size of the back cover.  Scrapbooking paper works nicely for this, as there are many patterns available.  Another option would be to use the comic section of an old newspaper or pictures cut from a magazine.
3.       Turn the two front cover pieces so that pattern/designs are facing out and secure them together using a glue stick or double stick tape.  Place them into the front cover of the jewel case and secure using double stick tape.  Repeat this for the back cover.
4.       Cut pieces of blank paper to approximately 4.5 inches in width.   Attach them together with a glue stick to form one long piece as shown below.   Fold the long piece accordion-style to form approximately 4.5 x 4.5 inch squares.

5.       Use a glue stick or double stick tape to the folded paper into the jewel case on the inside back cover.
6.       The finished “book” can be used as a scrapbook, journal, photo book, address book, or many other options.
